The 411 on EMSCULPT

EMSCULPT is based on high-intensity focused Electro-magnetic (HIFEM) field technology which has the ability to induce supramaximal muscle contractions.  The rapidly changing magnetic field induces electric currents in the tissue where it depolarizes neural membranes and governs motor units in the target muscles, causing concentric contractions.  The effects are highly selective due to is physiological characteristics only motor neurons are activated while other neurons or tissues are not responsive to the current and therefore stay unaffected.

The majority of human body composition is comprised of fat (approx. 25%) and muscle (42% male/36% female) tissues.  Many procedures address subcutaneous fat which correlates with the overall body shape and it reduction can deliver a slimmer look.  The underlying muscles are however equally important as an increased muscle tone better defines the body contour by reduction the localized prolapse/laxity and adds to a healthier aesthetic appearance.

The non-invasive HIFEM® procedure induces powerful muscle contractions not achievable through voluntary contractions.

During normal voluntary muscle contraction, the muscle fibers relax between each stimulus due to the nervous systems inability to signal another impulse while the previous one is still in action.  EMSCULPT generates impulses that are independent of brain function and at such a rapid frequency that doesn’t allow such a relaxation phase.  Under normal conditions the highest amount of tension that could be developed and held physiologically is called a maximal voluntary contraction.  Usually it lasts only for a splint second.  Contractions with a tension high than maximal voluntary contractions are defined as supramaximal.  EMSCULPT has the ability to generate supramaximal contractions and hold them for multiple seconds which significantly increases the physiologic stress/workload needed to allow muscles to adapt.

When exposed to strong contractions, the muscle tissue is forced to adapt to such extreme condition. It responds with a deep remodeling of its inner structure that results in muscle building and sculpting your body.

Energy is applied to the rectus abdominis, the transverse abdominis and the obliques all contract at the same time.  It is impossible to efficiently target and tighten specific muscle groups through standard exercise.  Five trials have been completed including studies using ultrasound measurements, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and animal studies.  The induction of supramaximal contractions leads to supramaximal lipolysis.  The body reacts to the extreme energy demands of the supramaximal contractions with an extreme catabolic reaction that results in a dramatic release of free fatty acids.  These fatty acids accumulate in surrounding adipocytes resulting in their dysfunction.  Lipolysis occurs mostly in the area in close proximity to the contracting muscles.  4 cm in circumferential reduction, 19% reduction in fat and 16% increase in muscle mass.  11% reduction in diastasis recti.  The supramaximal contractions cause muscle hypertrophy, more muscle fibers, but it also makes the muscle fibers that are there larger.  Treatment is well tolerated and generally comfortable.  Treatment is generally initiated around 30% intensity and at this level will feel some muscle activation, almost like a tickling sensation and titrate to full intensity within about 5-10 minutes.  Total treatment time is 30 minus.  Patients undergo two 30 min session a week for two weeks.   Time commitment is minimal.  Best candidates are people who have localized areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise but not overweight.  Standout features (1) completely noninvasive (2) treats muscle that no other device does (3) does not require anesthesia or anesthetic in anyway (4) causes fat loss (5) treats diastasis recti.
